There is an increasing scientific evidence of acupuncture's benefits to treat various diseases.

This can be seen in the "Update on Acupuncture" held in Barcelona in February 2011, clicking the button.

Besides these pathologies, there are other diseases that even without sufficient scientific evidence of their effectiveness, they have enough clinical evidence.

In the last ten years there has been an exponential number of clinical studies of acupuncture in journals of high impact factor. This is due to the especial research programs which began in October 2000 in Germany, and presenting results of effectiveness and efficiency, cost effectiveness and safety of acupuncture in certain diseases. These unprecedented programs randomized studies over a large population, some with placebo and other control compared with conventional treatment.

New studies have made possible, because of systematic reviews to start the recommendation process for the inclusion of acupuncture in our health systems.

The treatment of nausea and their postoperative vomiting with acupuncture is more than validated by five systematic reviews, most recently, a Cochrane review in 2009 of Lee & Fan 1. The contribution of this dysfunction postoperative acupuncture is very useful and simple non-drug, because it is based on a single point on the forearm.

Chronic headache Cochrane has three positive, two of Klaus Linde in 2009 2.3 relative to migraine and tension headaches by, and the oldest, Melchart in 2001 for idiopathic headache.

In chronic low back pain, there are currently four systematic reviews. Threse reviews are inconclusive but encouraging. The last one, published in Cochrane by Furlan et al 4 noted that there is evidence that acupuncture, combined with conventional therapies, reduces pain and works in chronic low back pain although studies are still scarce to dictate conclusions. These publications have been made by the American Medical Association in conjunction with the American Pain Society which has published guidelines where is indicated as a treatment option 5.6 and in 2010 an article appears in the New England recommending acupuncture for chronic low back pain unresponsive to standard therapy 7. Relating to back pain, a multicentrer randomized study of Jorge Vas 8 shows that acute nonspecific low back pain, acupuncture achieves a significant clinical improvement compared to conventional treatment at 3 weeks of onset. These results hold for the secondary endpoints of time off work and stay in pain-free rate at 3 weeks.

Today, we know thanks to three systematic reviews, the last one Cochrane Manheimer of 2010 9 that there are statistically significant benefit of acupuncture treatment for osteoarthritis knee pain compared with placebo acupuncture and the control group the waiting list. 10,11,12,13 Other studies indicate that acupuncture as an adjunct to pharmacological therapy in osteoarthritis of the knee is more effective than single drug therapy in reducing pain and stiffness and improved physical function and quality of life.

In a recent systematic review and meta-analysis of Jorge Vas14, proves that for the correction of non-cephalic fetal presentation, moxibustion acupuncture point Bladder-67 is beneficial, alone or in combination with acupuncture or with measures posture, compared with observation or isolated postural measures. Although not conclusive, the technique is shown to reduce certain complications of non-cephalic presentation.

In addition to these revisions, we also have a positive randomized study of Molsberger in 2010 15, comparing real acupuncture with sham acupuncture, concluding that the acupuncture based on Chinese medicine is an effective alternative to conventional treatment in chronic shoulder pain. 16,17,18 Other studies say that acupuncture with physiotherapy improves function and shoulder pain compared with physiotherapy as the sole treatment. This improvement was accompanied by a reduction in consumption of analgesics. Clinical improvement was maintained during the monitoring year. Being a simple and safe technique makes recommended as adjuvant treatment of subacromial pathology.

We also have a randomized and controlled study which shows that the treatment of chronic neck pain with acupuncture is more effective than placebo, and has a safety profile that allows its routine use in clinical practice. 19

We know that acupuncture can be an effective method in treating musculoskeletal pain unrelated to cancer presenting no serious adverse effects and significantly reducing the consumption of analgesics and anti-inflammatory 20.

It has also been shown to be effective in the treatment of overactive bladder due to a clinical trial, double-blind aleatoritzado a stimulation technique that uses electro-tibial nerve at a point on the outer ankle area 21.

On the other hand, there has been a dramatic increase in the basic research that are outstanding Elisabeth Stener-Victorin, Thomas Lundeberg, especially in the study of the effects of acupuncture at gynecologic have demonstrated in experimental mice increases uterine arterial circulation and can have positive results, among others, in the treatment of polycystic ovaries in women, 22,23,24.

This update has been collected and released scientific advances, despite the great difficulties the basic and clinical research in acupuncture. It has been found necessary to create and fund research groups, primary care centers, hospitals and universities, to continue working on new research that integrate acupuncture as a medical procedure more in the field of medicine pathologies current in their proven useful.

It will have to assess that, in the patologies which currently there is enough evidence of efficacy and effectiveness, can take the necessary measures that acupuncture is used on a regular, conventional and articulated in the public health system and private sectors.
